Coronary Angiography and Angioplasty: What to Expect

It is natural to feel anxious about a heart procedure. Understanding what will happen can help you feel more comfortable and prepared. Your care team will explain each step and give you time to ask questions.

Before your procedure

We will review your symptoms, previous tests and medications, and explain why the procedure is recommended. You will receive individual instructions about fasting and medicines. The benefits, possible risks and alternatives will be discussed with you before consent.

During your procedure

A coronary angiogram shows the arteries supplying your heart. A thin tube is introduced through an artery, usually at the wrist or sometimes the groin. Local anaesthetic numbs the entry area. You are usually awake, and medication may be offered to help you relax. Your heart rhythm and blood pressure are monitored throughout.

You may notice pressure at the entry site or a brief warm sensation from the contrast dye. Let the team know if you feel uncomfortable or worried.

Will I need a stent?

An angiogram does not automatically mean you need a stent. Depending on the findings, the best treatment may be medication, angioplasty with a stent, or occasionally bypass surgery. Recommendations are tailored to your condition and discussed with you.

Recovery and going home

Afterwards, you will rest while the team monitors your recovery. Many patients having a planned procedure can go home the same day or the following day, depending on their treatment and condition.

Before discharge, you will receive clear instructions about medication, caring for the entry site, returning to activities, follow-up and when to seek urgent help. If a stent is placed, taking the prescribed antiplatelet medicines without interruption is especially important. Do not stop them without advice from your treating cardiologist.

Our aim is for you to feel informed, listened to and supported throughout your care.
