Cardiac MRI: What to Expect
It is natural to have questions about an MRI scan. Cardiac MRI provides detailed information about your heart’s structure, pumping function and muscle. It uses a magnetic field and radio waves, without X-ray radiation. The team will help you understand the process before you begin.
Before your scan
Tell the imaging team about any pacemaker, defibrillator, other implanted device, previous surgery or metal fragments, and bring your device card if available. These require individual safety checks; having an implant does not always rule out MRI. Also report kidney problems, previous contrast reactions and possible pregnancy.
Follow the department’s instructions about food, caffeine and medicines. Preparation can differ if a stress perfusion scan is planned. Do not stop prescribed medicines without advice.
During your scan
You lie on a bed that moves into the scanner. ECG stickers monitor your heartbeat, and a receiving pad is placed over your chest. You will hear tapping and knocking sounds; ear protection is provided. The team gives breathing instructions, including short breath-holds, to help obtain clear images.
A cannula may be used to give gadolinium-based contrast when needed. Some examinations also include medication to assess blood flow under stress; this will be explained separately. The scan often takes around 45–90 minutes, depending on the questions being assessed.
If you feel anxious or claustrophobic
Please tell the team before your appointment. They can discuss support, pauses and whether medication to help you relax is appropriate. Staff can communicate with you during the scan, and you will have a way to alert them. You do not need to hide discomfort or struggle silently.
After your scan and results
Many patients return to usual activities afterwards. If sedation or stress medication is used, follow the specific recovery, escort and driving instructions. Specialist review of the images takes time; your cardiologist will explain the findings and what they mean for your care.
